Well its a little late but it feels like fall fishing is here. We have been doing a lot of bottom fishing lately and the fishing is great! The best part about the bottom fishing is that it is good as close as 8 to 10 miles off the beach. The nearshore bite is all gags and all the sea bass you want while the farther offshore you get the scamps and red grouper are biting good as well. In addition to the groupers, there is an assortment of other bottom critters to catch including sea bass, triggers, grunts, and snappers. The gulf stream fishing is good as well. Wahoo, blackfin tuna, and sailfissh are biting good with the occasional mahi thrown in. I’ve added some pictures to the photo page so check them out to see what we’ve been catching.

The bonita fishing finally took off last week and they are here in full force. The little tuna are a blast to catch and great for the table and the best thing is its easily doable on a half day trip. We target them by casting small jigs or trolling. These guys are only a couple miles off the beach and fight hard, especially on light spinning gear. I fished for them everyday last week averaging 10-15 a day as well as all the bluefish you can stand. Its nonstop action start to finish! In addition to that the gulf stream fishing has been awesome with plenty of wahoo and blackfin tuna and the first few mahis showing up. Jig and topwater bite is still hot and trolling is great as well. The weekend weather looks like its gonna be great. Sunny, warm, and calm seas right on through the middle of next week so come on down to Wrightsville Beach and get in on some of this action.

Just a little update on the fishing here at Wrightsville Beach. Jigging is the name of the game right now and it is off the hook! We made it out a few days ago and the fishing was as good as you could ever want. Matt, Robert and myself left the dock about 6am headed for the promised land and once again there was no disappointment when we arrived. We started the morning out looking for tuna and they were happy to oblige. After a few quick drifts we had 6 nice fat blackfins on ice. When that bite slowed we made a move inshore and it was on like donkey kong. It was a fish on every drop until you couldn’t stand it anymore. We ended the day with a mixed bag of everything but the final tally that ended up in the fish box was 6 nice blackfins and 6 nice cobia one of which went 58lbs. If you want to get a crack at this give me a call! Sorry no pictures today but we were too busy catching fish!

Headed up to Hatteras yesterday to get in on some of the bluefin tuna jigging and popping and we weren’ t disappointed. We made the easy 25 mile run to the grounds and started looking for signs of tuna. It didn’t take long and we had our first hook up. Glenn fought the fish for a while and at the last minute the fish broke off and lived to fight another day. We continued to search and at about 11 we had our first hook up on the jig. Chris had the fish to the boat in short order and we had our keeper on ice. It was all catch and release after that. We ended up landing 4 more fish one of which was a fat 72 incher. If you want some of this insane bluefin action give me a call!

We are coming up to my favorite time of year for fishing down here in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Fall fishing in southeastern North Carolina is wide open for a multitude of species. The grouper fishing is awesome right now with limits of gags, scamps, and reds almost every trip. The wahoo fishing is great right now with most boats going to the gulf stream catching at least three or four with lots of reports of double digit days. King mackeral will show in big numbers any day with a few already trickiling in. These speed demons are a blast on light tackle. I typically target them with light spinning gear so the angler really has his hands full when we hook the big one but it is always a ton of fun fighting them on the light gear. The beaches are covered up with big spanish and albies everywhere so now is a great opportunity to really load the boat, even on a half day trip. Come on down to Wrightsville Beach and experience this great fall fishing!

On Sunday Capt Arlen and myself teamed up to to put Jack and Brian on a nice mixed bag of fish out of wrightsville beach. The plan was to start the day with some topwater AJ popping. We were not disappointed. We got to the spot and the fish were eager to eat anything and everything we put in the water. Livebait, poppers, jigs it didn’t matter. After somewhere between 15 and 20 AJs, we decided, with the slick calm conditions, to run around and look for some different species. We made it about 2 miles before a floating board stopped us in our tracks. The board was loaded with mahis and a suprise wahoo that ate the first bait we put in the water and was gone. Half an hour of mahi mayhem left us with a limit and it was on to the next spot. The next stop was Arlen’s african pompano hole and once again we weren’t disappointed. Jack put a live bait over and got bit right off the bat and after a 15 minute battle he put a 35 pound pompano on the deck. This day just keeps getting better. We rounded out the day hitting a few grouper holes and bagging a limit of grouper. It ended up being another day for the record books out of Wrightsville Beach NC.

Today was a fun fishing day with my brother, Danielle, Kate, and Alexa. With no luck finding any pogeys the call was to just troll dead bait. The ocean was slick calm and after we made a few passes with tre trolling gear out we decided to bring it in and break out the poppers. First cast the fish missed. Second cast, she wasn’t so lucky. With a sloid hookup i handed kate the rod and she fought her first amberjack like a champ. Landing a decent sized amberjack around heavy structure is not an easy feat but she did an awesome job. Unfortunately Zack dropped the fish overboard before the picture so she had to catch another. Cast the popper and it was on again almost immediately. Once again, Kate was on the rod and she whooped that fish to the surface in no time. The next hookup was Alexa and she did a great job fighting the fish. After the amberjack bonanza, we went back to trolling and managed a few kings before it was time to come in.

We had Christopher and crew today out for an afternoon half day trip. The goal was to catch a few sharks but i had all ideas that we had a good shot at a cobia or two as well. We pounded our way a few miles offshore in much less than perfect conditions. We got to our spot and anchored upand deployed the chum bag and our live baits. It wasn’t long before we started getting a few bites and then all of a sudden one of the top rods starts screaming and i couldn’t imagine what we had. With a team effort we finally get the fish to the boat and to my surprise it was a monster king mackeral. It was by far the biggest ever on my boat and i guessed the weight around 40 pounds. After all that excitement we redeployed the baits and and were immediately getting bit again. We landed a few small sharks and then another top rod goes off and the fish stays right on the surface. I can see it is a cobia and after a tough battle we landed the fish. Cobia are tough fighters and delicious on the dinner table so they are always a plus. It was another great day on the water with great fishing here in Wrightsville Beach.

Myself, Mikey, Arlen, and Jon left wrightsville beach with blackfin tuna on our minds. After our last trip we had a feeling they would be there and we were not disappointed. We set up on the first spot to jig and look up to see blackfins crashing flying fish everywhere. We quickly reeled in the jigging gear and busted out the topwater rods and it was on. It was double and triple hook ups all day. It was simple, look for the flying fish blast out of the water and cast to them and it was game on. In the mddle of the day, the tuna had bait balls pushed up to the surface and it was an all out feeding frenzy. Cast a lure into the fray, come out with a tuna. It was incredible. We finally had to leave the fish biting because all of the fishboxes were slam full. We ended the day with 35 blackfins and 4 or 5 skipjacks the made a delicious tuna salad. It was some of the best fishing you would ever experience anywhere in the world right here in Wrightsville Beach, NC.

Hey everybody. I just wanted to give a synopsis of what is going on down in Wrightsville Beach right now. Due to the current grouper closure, all of the trips we are running now are gulf stream trips but when you get the weather to go the fishing has been spectacular. The first trip of 2010 started us off with a bang. We landed an 80 pound + black grouper. It is rare enough to catch a black grouper around here but to catch one of those proportions is almost unheard of.

Next, we Scott from New Zealand. We were fortunate enough to have two pretty days for Scott and the fishing was incredible. We caught tons of big amberjacks, white trevally, almaco jacks, and all kinds of other critters. The highlight of the trip were the thirteen african pompano we landed. These hard fighting fish are a blast on light tackle and great on the dinner table.

Every trip right now should have very good results. Right now we have all the amberjacks you could want and they are getting bigger. There have recently been fish reported close to the 60 inch mark which is an absolute monster. There are still plenty of cobia and african pompano around as well. Blackfin tuna are present and our migratory pelagics should be arriving in numbers soon. The mahi mahi and wahoo bite last spring was insane and we are hoping for more of the same this year. The best part about it is we can target all these fish on artificial baits, either jigging, casting topwater lures, or trolling. If you want to experience the most fun you’ll ever have fishing, come jigging at Wrightsville beach and it will be a memory not soon forgotten. Also don’t forget to check out the photo gallery for some recent pictures of the fish we have been catching.
